The Gathering - Chapter Ten

Sabriel’s mouth slanted over hers. Rayna sucked in a breath while a voice in the back of her head screamed, “No!”

Rayna felt powerless to stop him. As much as she didn’t want him near her, a part of her seemed to crave it just the same. She wanted to know what his kisses tasted like. Wanted to feel his skin under her palms and the guilt that came along with those thoughts finally snapped her out of whatever spell he always seemed to weave around her.

She pushed him away and walked to the other side of the room. “Don’t do that again.”

Sabriel smiled and nodded his head. His eyes were sparkling with laughter. He looked pleased about something. “As you wish.”

Rayna stared at him, took in the way his hair fell around his face, the breadth of his shoulders, and the slimness of his hips. This man was dangerous. If Garrett didn’t get here soon she was sure she’d do something she’d live to regret.

Inhaling deeply, she looked away and steered the conversation into neutral territory. “What did Victor mean exactly by calling my wolf?”

He sighed. “It’s exactly as it sounds. He can call the wolf. Make her come to the surface.”

Rayna looked back over at him. “Like, force the change?”

“Yes.”

That’s what she was afraid of. She'd heard some of the others talking about a forced change but wasn't sure how it was done or why. No one seemed to want to talk about it. Shifting was painful enough without the wolf being forced to the surface and now, it seemed, she would be on the receiving end of that painful ritual.

She shuddered and changed the subject again. “Catherine said Victor had the grounds guarded. Do you know by what?”

His body went still, like it had when they’d been in front of Victor. “Things you don’t ever want to meet.”

“What sort of things?”

“Demons.” His gaze hardened and he took a step closer to her. “Please don’t try to leave the house. Even I won’t venture outside without guard here.”

The Gathering - Chapter Nine

Garrett was cranky and he knew the others were avoiding him because of it. He’d stalked the house, ran the woods until his legs ached, cleaned out one of the larger bedrooms and transferred his things into it, and spent endless hours staring out the window at nothing. He was getting twitchy, restless, and down right pissed. Why hadn’t Rayna called him yet? He was sure she would have once she’d settled in to where it was she was headed, but she hadn’t. Not even a simple call to say, “Hey. I’m all right.” What did he get instead? Nothing.

Spending a restless night alone caused the wolf to drive him near mad. It prowled just beneath the surface and demanded they go after his mate. He was almost tempted to do it if it weren’t for the fact he didn’t have a clue where to begin looking. He thought Rayna may have gone back to Bluff’s Point but she’d put her apartment up for sale when they went back to grab their belongings the month before. There was nothing in Bluff’s Point for her now. Nothing but friends, he thought. She could be staying with one of them. If so, why hadn’t she called!

He slapped the windowsill and turned, walking back across the living room. Jacob hadn’t come back and he would have enjoyed the distraction. He could only imagine what Carmen was up to by now. He didn’t trust the woman and he was sure she knew Rayna was gone. Surely she had someone watching the house.

Thinking of Carmen, he wished the woman would show up. He had more than a few things to say to her. A few things he was sure would piss her off. He could hardly wait for the confrontation. It would distract him enough to stop thinking about Rayna every three seconds.

The sound of the front door slamming, followed by the rapid beat of someone running, drew his attention. Gavin ran through the doorway and Garrett knew by the look on his face, whatever he was about to say, wasn’t good. “What is it?”

Gavin took several deep breaths, his chest heaving. “Up on the high ridge,” he gasped. “Saw tire tracks.” He leaned over, put his hands on his knees and held up one hand, motioning for him to give him a second.

Garrett’s wolf grew restless then. Gavin must have run like the devil himself was after him to be that winded. He waited impatiently and crossed the room when the man just stood there panting. “What the hell is it, Gavin?”

He stood, took another deep breath, and exhaled. “I was up on the high ridge. There were a few small saplings broken near the road and I saw tire tracks in the mud so I followed them.” He looked away and ran his hand through his hair before meeting his gaze again. “The tracks disappeared over the side of the cliff. When I looked… I saw Mitch’s car about half way down.”

The Gathering - Chapter Eight

There were clothes on the end of the bed when Rayna woke, including under-things. She raised an eyebrow as she picked up the panties and bra. Black lace and see through. Surprisingly, they were her size and not so skimpy they would be uncomfortable to wear. Jeans, a royal blue shirt, and socks were also there. Beside the clothes was a bag that held toiletries and a perfume that smelled faintly of flowers.

She didn’t want to even think about who picked out the clothes, especially the black lacy things, and dressed quickly, brushed her hair and teeth, slipped on her shoes and walked out of her room. She glanced at the door as she pulled it shut behind her. She was sure she’d locked it before she’d lain down. She shrugged her shoulders before heading down the hall.

The smell of food drew her to the kitchen and the man who had driven the SUV the day before was by the stove, cooking. He turned to look at her and motioned to the table with a nod of his head.

Sabriel was there, reading a newspaper and sipping something from a cup. He was dressed casually again and the scene looked so domestic she almost laughed. Seeing a vampire doing things that seemed so normal wasn’t what she expected.

He must have sensed her presence for he turned and smiled at her. “Good morning… well, evening, I should say. Please, have a seat. Luther will have your breakfast ready in a few more minutes.”

Rayna looked at the table, noticing then there was another place setting beside her own and it wasn’t sitting in front of Sabriel. “Are you expecting company?”

“We are.” He sat his newspaper aside and stood, pulling out the chair next to him and waited for her.

She sighed and debated on not cooperating. Her stomach didn’t give her much choice, though. It growled, loudly, and her cheeks heated before she walked to the table and sat down. “Thanks,” she said, quietly, as Sabriel slid the chair under her.

A soft, “you’re welcome,” followed before he once again took his own seat. “Did you sleep well?”

“As well as could be expected after being kidnapped and taken to only god knows where.”

The Gathering - Chapter Seven

They stopped just before dawn, pulling into a garage big enough to hold several cars. The walls were white, the concrete floor spotless and for a garage, it looked rarely used.

Rayna blinked as the driver opened his door and flooded the inside of the SUV with light. “Where are we?”

Sabriel opened his door and climbed out. “Somewhere you can rest.” Rayna didn’t move. She watched him and was surprised when he walked around the car and opened her door before holding his hand out to her.

“I didn’t know you were such gentlemen.” She ignored his offered hand. She climbed out and took a minute to stretch before looking back out the garage door. The sun was coming up over the horizon and the sky was lit in shades of orange and red. The smell of fresh cut grass and flowers filled her head and she inhaled the scent, welcoming it after being trapped inside the SUV for so many hours.

“Not all vampires are monsters, Ms. Ford.”

She turned back to face him and smiled. “No? When will I get to meet one of the good ones?” He frowned at her and her skin felt irritated all of a sudden. She rubbed her arms, trying to get the sensation to go away. “How do you do that?”

“How do I do what?”

“Touch me with just a look?”
